Summer Program 2020
Summer Buddhist Literary Chinese Course
June 10 - August 6, 2020 (Eight weeks including four days of orientation)
The Buddhist Literary Chinese summer program is offered at the beginning level. The level of intensity of the course is high and students are expected to invest considerable time and effort in order to meet class requirements and academic expectations. Students who successfully complete the courses will be on their way towards achieving proficiency in Buddhist Literary Chinese.
This intensive Buddhist Literary Chinese course is designed for beginning students with no prior knowledge of Buddhist Literary Chinese, although students not familiar with Chinese characters will need to work harder at the beginning of the course to learn an introductory set of characters. The program provides a thorough grounding in the basics of Buddhist Literary Chinese, and uses readings from sūtra passages right from the beginning of the course to introduce grammar and vocabulary. The course also includes discussions of how to interpret Buddhist Literary Chinese, providing students with an important foundation for the reading of Buddhist Literary Chinese literature.
Students are lead through basic texts in a detailed and gradual manner so that even complete beginners will be able to access their meaning while building their vocabulary and gaining familiarity with the syntax and possibilities of Buddhist Literary Chinese grammar.
