Summer Study Opportunities

Summer Program 2021

Orientation sessions start from 9 June 2021, and classes run from 14 June to 6 August 2021 (eight weeks).

Please note that the information below relates to the online Summer Program 2020. More information regarding the Summer Program 2021 will be available in January 2021. 

Online Summer Program 2020

We are happy to announce that Rangjung Yeshe Institute will offer the following courses online as part of the 2020 Online Summer Program:  

·     Buddhist Studies 

·     Colloquial Tibetan (beginning, intermediate, advanced) 

·     Classical Tibetan (beginning, intermediate)

·     Sanskrit (beginning, intermediate) 

·     Nepali (beginning, intermediate) 

·     Pāli (beginning) 

The 2020 language programs offer full immersion into the Tibetan, Sanskrit, Nepali, Buddhist Literary Chinese and Pāli language. The Buddhist Studies program provides a living exposure to Buddhist philosophy and a practical introduction to the richness of personal meditation training.

All the courses (with the exception of the two beginning-level Classical Tibetan courses):

· will run for a period of eight weeks;

· are equivalent to 6 credits of study in the RYI Bachelor of Arts program;

· will include a combination of live interactive activities with the teaching faculty as well as pre-recorded or downloadable activities; and

· will offer three hours per day of classes and interactive sessions held at different times of the day to make sure students located in various time zones can benefit fully from the learning activities.

Registration for all courses is now open. As enrolment for some courses will be capped at a maximum number of students, we encourage students to register early to reserve their spot in a given course.

Due to the exceptional circumstances of this year, RYI will offer a 50% discount on our regular tuition for all courses. The standard tuition for eight-week courses will be $1,600 for for-credit study. Not-for-credit, non-interactive versions of some courses (but not all) will be offered at a reduced rate of $800 or $570. To take part in the course you will need to have access to a PC, Mac or Linux computer that is capable of running Microsoft Teams, which you can download free of charge by clicking here

Classes will be delivered through a blend of recorded and live sessions, while the Assistant Language Instructor and Dharma Conversation classes will be live sessions.

In these distance learning course, electronic copies of study texts will be provided.

All summer programs are fully accredited by Kathmandu University if you take the for-credit option of the course.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment and all applications are subject to approval by the Centre for Buddhist Studies.

Closing date for applications is June 7, however it is advised to book before then as classes may reach maximum capacity before June 7.

Summer Buddhist Studies

This online course is a full immersion into the theory and practice of Buddhism. Students are introduced to both classical and modern Buddhist scholarship and meditation training. In this way, the course offers students first-hand experience of many key aspects of Buddhist training which are otherwise rarely accessible to lay students. Read more...

Summer Colloquial Tibetan Course

The online colloquial Tibetan summer program is offered on three levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. The level of intensity of the summer Tibetan courses is high and the courses require considerable time and effort in order to meet class requirements and academic expectations. However, students who successfully complete the summer program will be well on their way towards a high degree of proficiency in colloquial Tibetan.  Read more...

Summer Classical Tibetan Course

This summer, Classical Tibetan is offered at two levels: beginning and intermediate. The beginning-level courses are online, non-intensive but comprehensive courses that can be taken over a period of up to 15 weeks. Conversely, Intermediate Classical Tibetan is an eight-week summer course that takes students on an intensive and rapidly productive learning journey. The online Sanskrit summer program is offered on two levels: Beginning and Intermediate. The level of intensity of the summer Sanskrit courses is high and students are expected to invest considerable time and effort in order to meet class requirements and academic expectations. Buddhist Literary Chinese

Please note this class has been canceled this year. The Buddhist Literary Chinese summer program is offered at the beginning level. The level of intensity of the course is high and students are expected to invest considerable time and effort in order to meet class requirements and academic expectations. Students who successfully complete the courses will be on their way towards achieving proficiency in Buddhist Literary Chinese. 

Pali

The online Pāli summer program is offered at the beginning level. The level of intensity of the course is high and students are expected to invest considerable time and effort in order to meet class requirements and academic expectations. Students who successfully complete the courses will be well on their way towards a high degree of proficiency in Pāli. This course is equivalent to one academic year of Pāli Studies. The course introduces Pāli grammar, combined with regular chanting and translating texts from Canonical Pāli texts. Read more...
