RYI offers the Academic English and Advanced Study Methods course as a summer intensive program with the aim to help students acquire additional English language and academic study skills.
This course is open to all non-native English-speaking applicants who feel they would benefit from a more solid academic foundation in the English language. In addition, RYI highly recommends the course to those students holding a high school (10+2) diploma obtained from an institution where English is not the primary language of instruction.
How Does It Work?
If you are interested in the Academic English and Advanced Study Methods course offered during the summer program, you can apply directly to the course by clicking the “Apply” button below. Applications for summer program will be open from October 1 through May 1.
Alternatively, if you are interested in studying in the BA program at RYI and think you may need to take Academic English and Advanced Study Methods to qualify for the BA, please follow this procedure to apply:
1. Apply for the BA program by April 17, 2017. If you do not apply by April 17, you will not be able to join the Academic English and Advanced Study Methods course during summer 2017.
2. Take the English Language Proficiency Exam (ELPE) at RYI's administration office on April 28, 2017.
3. Receive your ELPE results.
4. For those applicants whose scores fall within the appropriate range, join Academic English and Advanced Study Methods which begins on June 6.
Regarding ELPE results, if your score is high enough, you will be admitted directly into the BA program and will not be required to attend the Academic English and Advanced Study Methods course. If your score falls within a middling range, you will be asked to take (and pass) Academic English and Advanced Study Methods in order to gain admission into the BA for the fall intake. If your score is in the lower range, you will not be offered admission to Academic English and Advanced Study Methods.
For applicants who apply to the BA program after April 17, the ELPE will be offered again on August 4, 2017. However, students who take this exam in August and do not score high enough for direct admission to the BA will have to wait until June 2018 to take Academic English and Advanced Study Methods. RYI encourages students to meet the April 17 application deadline if they are planning to start studying in the upcoming fall.
What Will I Learn in the Course?
This intensive Academic English and Advanced Study Methods course is designed for students who are not native speakers of English and provides a rigorous introduction to the academic study methods used in most Western institutions of higher education.
The course focuses on several important skills: first, foundational reading skills, including learning how to identify an author’s thesis in the context of a scholarly article and how to critique the author’s arguments, both key steps in learning to engage with academic articles and develop essential critical evaluation skills. Second, students will refine their English grammar, particularly as it is used in formal essays and will increase their academic vocabulary in the humanities, with many of the reading exercises drawn from the field of Buddhist Studies. Students will become comfortable with using sophisticated terminology and grammatical structures in their writing and will develop the skills necessary to comprehend, interpret and critique texts.
Academic English and Advanced Study Methods is eight weeks long and taught during the summer. It is offered for credit through Kathmandu University and completion of the course will earn six credits towards the BA degree for students enrolled in the BA program.
The course begins with a three-day orientation that starts June 6, 2017 and offers four hours of daily classes for eight weeks, from June 12, 2017 to August 4, 2017.
