This course explores the basics tenets of Buddhist philosophical thought. Students will start by exploring the Four Noble Truths, the subject of Buddha Śākyamuni's first turning of the wheel of the Dharma, and continue through the topics of No Self, the Five Aggregates, Dependent Origination, the truth of the Path and the Fruition, and the Buddhist cosmos. By studying these topics, students will be able to gain an understanding of these basic tenets of the Buddhist philosophical system.
This course is offered from time to time as appropriate and addresses topics not regularly covered in the curriculum.
In Classical Tibetan II, students will continue with an introduction to the classical Tibetan language and its grammar, and gain more experience and confidence reading and understanding classical Tibetan texts. After completing this course, successful students will be able to approach Tibetan texts by themselves with confidence.
